ECONOMICS

Department of Economics offers courses leading to the B.Sc. degree in Economics, which may be awarded with Honours or as a pass degree. The objective of the B.Sc. (Economics) degree Programme is to prepare student for careers in government, business, the professions, teaching and research.

To achieve this objective, the courses are designed to provide a clear understanding of the methodology of Economics and the use of the tools of economic analysis. The courses offered and the depth at which they are taught are such that the graduate of the Department would have acquires the competence to handle problems in both the public and the private sectors which are amenable to the analytical method and tools of Economics.

Apart from providing the student with a sound theoretical knowledge, the Programme is designed to offer the student fairly high degree of knowledge in the special area of the discipline. This should not only enable the graduate of the Department to handle public policy and common management problems but also provide him with a sound undergraduate background for postgraduate studies.
Students admitted into the Programme may specialize in any of the following areas: Industrial Economics, Development Economics; Quantitative Economics; Economics of Natural resources; International Economic, Public Finance and Monetary Economics.

Objectives

The following are the specific objectives of the programme:
(i)    To provide basic knowledge needed for the understanding and analysis of problems related to the management or administration of industrial, commercial, public and other human organisations.
(ii)    To equip students of management with the skills needed for recognizing and defining problems and taking appropriate decisions using scientific techniques and tools.
(iii)    To inculcate in the students, an awareness of, and sensitivity to, environmental factors and conditions and their impact on managerial/administrative practice and decisions.
(iv)    To develop leadership and interpersonal relations skills which are needed for working in organisations.
(v)    To develop a knowledge and understanding of the concepts, problems and practice of management.
(vi)    To equip students with a thorough knowledge and understanding of responsibilities typically exercised within the management, industrial, marketing, operation and personnel functions.
(vii)    To develop clear principles and values to guide ethical conduct at the individual, corporate and national levels.

Programme Duration

i.    B.Sc.  – 4 years (8 semesters)
ii    Semester – 15 weeks (excluding exam period

Entry Requirements

(A) General Admission Requirement:

Minimum entry qualification into part-time B.Sc. Economics degree programme is five credits relevant related subjects including English and Mathematics obtained in not more than two sittings in any of  the following examinations:
•    SSCE, WAEC, NECO, GCE WAEC, GCE NECO,     NABTEB or their     equivalents

(B) Direct Entry Requirement

In addition to the general admissions requirement stated above, an applicant is expected to posses any of the under-    listed qualifications:
i      A minimum of two relevant subjects passed at GCE Advanced level Examination
ii.    NCE, at least 3 subjects passed on merit
iii.   A foundation level pass at the professional stage of any relevant professional examination
(ICSA, IPMN, ICAN, CIBN, CISBN).
